W.R.A.P. 2010 ® kicks off with a Special Wine Reception and registration on Thursday evening from 6:30 - 9:30 PM at the WRAP House on West Chop, Martha's Vineyard. Mingle with an Oscar winner, some Wall Street giants, Broadway Star, super surgeon, opera singer, school teacher, homemakers, painter, civil rights icons and a host of others. Guests are invited to partake in a post-reception nightcap and mingle with other attendees. A tax deductible donation (rsvp) for the Opening Wine Reception helps support our WRAP Fellowship leadership program; Registration fee for WRAP click here.
Friday begins with beach and exercise activities at WRAP’s private beach followed by fun discussions.
WRAP FILM DISCUSSION WITH LISA CORTES OF THE OSCAR WINNING FILM PRECIOUS
On Saturday at the Harbor View Hotel we will have a preview and discussion of a new movie under way lead by Lisa Cortes, Executive Producer of Precious, Lisa Collins, Mark Schwartzburt and Maxim Thorne: Can we Create Change and Social Justice through Film?
Lisa Cortes (Executive Producer of Academy Award winning Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire; co-founder of Def Jam; Yale-BA) and Maxim Thorne, founder of WRAP, will lead the discussion on how films are created that are artful and also socially conscious. Films can use their entertainment value and popular appeal as a way to draw attention to social issues and stimulate dialogue. Lisa and Mark's documentary provides a lens to explore Race and the American dream through the story of early film entrepreneur, Oscar Micheaux and the town of Gregory, South Dakota which has adopted him as an unlikely son in their celebration of his legacy of silent films in a yearly film festival. The clash of cultures and characters will provide a colorful platform to engage audiences in a much needed conversation about race. This conversation is especially needed now as we witness the continuing and disturbing effects of our Nation's lack of engagement with our fractured legacy.

After our exercise, breakfast and movie preview on Saturday, August 21, 2010, WRAP will participate with the Yale family for “Yale Day in the Sun on Martha’s Vineyard.” Enjoy an afternoon of intellectual stimulation, reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones. The afternoon begins with conversations with two of Yale's best, Master Jonathan Holloway, Professor of History, African American Studies and American Studies presenting, “The Right Kind of People: The Silences in a Civil Rights Narrative.” And Omer Bajwa, Coordinator of Muslim Life at Yale presenting, “Muslim Life Engaging the Sacred & the Secular - Anything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask." Then have fun in the sun with a cocktail reception.
WRAP Activities
W.R.A.P. ® is comprised of key interactive sessions, some held simultaneously, where participants enjoy reflecting off-the-record on actively living history. We all engage in fun, vigorous and civil discussion sometimes led by “experts” in varying fields. This gives all of us the opportunity to get to know each other and our families in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.
Enjoying the Vineyard
Martha’s Vineyard also offers great recreational opportunities and we have set up several receptions and playthings for everyone to do. Time is set aside for recreation and meals and sports. A Tentative Program will be sent to registered participants approximately two weeks prior to W.R.A.P. ®.
